In an inaugural coming together these two stunning Sydney performers with international renown, perform duos by Luciano Berio and Alejandro Vinao alongside Australian solos by Brett Dean and Hollis Taylor. Featuring pre-recorded backing tracks, a plethora of percussion and James’s viola d’amore this promises to be a gripping performance of huge sonic and visual variety.
Internationally acclaimed percussion soloist, chamber musician and artistic director of Ensemble Offspring, Claire Edwardes has been described by the press as a ‘sorceress of percussion’ performing with ‘spellbinding intensity’ and ‘graceful virtuosity’. Her award-winning performances combine a theatrical energy with charismatic and original interpretations bringing to life the varied array of music she performs.
Claire is the only Australian musician to win the APRA Art Music Award for Excellence by an Individual three times (2016, 2012, 2007), was the recipient of a recent Australia Council award and a Freedman Fellowship and has been the winner of numerous European instrumental and percussion competitions as well as 1999 Australian Young Performer of the Year. Recently appearing as soloist with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra at the Myer Music Bowl and on Play School to an audience of thousands of children, Claire is passionate about building audiences for percussion and new sounds.
Violist James Wannan is based in Sydney, having previously studied viola with Alice Waten in Melbourne and viola d'amore in Vienna with Marianne Rônez. He explores his passion for music, from ancient to contemporary, on a number of instruments. James is an Artistic Associate with Sydney Chamber Opera.
As soloist, James has performed in Elliott Gyger's opera Fly Away Peter, featured at the Melbourne Festival, recorded a CD of music by Jack Symonds, collaborated on five new works as a member of the Australian Piano Quartet and toured to China with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. He has performed as a viola d'amore soloist in festivals in Austria and Germany and has been invited to perform as Guest Principal Viola with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra.
