Decolonising Club Culture & Emancipating the Dance Floor with Ayebatonye Abrakasa

Rhythmic beats and flashing lights, writhing bodies letting loose and getting sweaty, a bit of Saturday night bump & grind - welcome to the dance floor. But can the humble dance floor be more than this?

Transformed through hybrid sets, disco and pumping worldwide beats, can we dance our way to a more inclusive society, revitalizing Sydney nightlife along the way? Can club culture be used to contest and dismantle cultural stereotypes?

This month at Rising Minds Sydney we explore the future of the dance floor and consider it as more than an alcohol fuelled party pash fest, but a space for political activism and a safe haven for all those that feel they can’t fully embrace their identity anywhere else.

Fresh from DJ sets at Vivid and her sold out The Iconic Vogue Ball, DJ, activitist and Head organizer of the Women’s March Sydney Ayebatonye Abrakasa will join Rising Minds Sydney this June to talk about decolonizing club culture and emancipating the dance floor.
