Unashamedly Original: Festival of Cutting-Edge Performance

  • City Recital Hall 2-12 Angel Place Sydney, NSW, 2000 Australia (map)

A two-day festival transforming City Recital Hall into a hub of creativity, celebrating experimental music, theatre and visuals that are at once cutting-edge and disarmingly poetic.

FEATURING
FourPlay String Quartet
Speak Percussion
Tangents
Wendy Sharpe & The Australian Art Quartet
Topology & The Australian Voices
Sydney Conservatorium of Music, The University of Sydney.

Comrpised of seven concerts of about an hour each, this is a festival that doesn’t shy away from bringing together a string quartet and an Archibald prize-winning artist, combining biting political rhetoric with impeccable choral harmonies, or blurring the boundaries of electronic and acoustic sounds.

Highlights include Speak Percussion’s Fluorophone, where analogue and digital fluorescent lights, the naked flame, strobe lights and LED discs combine with percussion to create a kaleidoscopic sound world. And, in Transducer, Speak Percussion’s Artistic Director Eugene Ughetti and new media artist Robin Fox explore the relationship between percussion and the microphone, space and kinetics, and acoustic and processed sound.

One of Australia’s most acclaimed visual artists, Wendy Sharpe, joins forces with Australian Art Quartet to recreate William Hogarth’s masterpiece, live on stage, with music by Handel, Pärt and Shostakovich, in The Enraged Musicians.
