Zicla - Cao Thanh Lan – zither and Gregor Siedl - clarinet, with guest Laura Altman - clarinet
Freya Shack-Arnott - cello
Jim Denley - prepared alto sax and Matthias Schack-Arnott - percussion
Zicla is a project by duo Cao Thanh Lan (VN) – Gregor Siedl (AT) with electro-acoustic compositions and composed improvisations for prepared marxophone, clarinet and electronics.
Clarinet and zither are commonly known for folk music across the globe - using these two instruments in a new syntax evokes familiar and at the same time, foreign environments that draw the listener into a world of sonic exploration.
The clarinet´s microtonal soundscapes and noise structures interweave with particular sounds from the extended zither creating an unusual imaginary space, introspective moods, abstract microtonal dialogues and intriguing sound textures.
Matthias Schack-Arnott is a Melbourne based percussive artist working in contemporary classical and experimental music as a performer, composer and improvisor.
Schack-Arnott’s solo work explores unique and ambitious approaches to percussive performance, often involving the development of new instrumental set-ups built in collaboration with architects, engineers and technicians. His 2014 solo project, Fluvial, won the Green Room Award in the category ‘Outstanding Work by an Emerging Artist’. He is a finalist for the 2016 Melbourne Prize for Music in the ‘Development’ category.
