The eigth in a series of bi-monthly events organised by members of UNSW’s Sound, Energies and Environments group features guest live performances by Splinter Orchestra, Liam Bray & Ben Carey, and Ailsa Liu. Showcasing a diverse range of artists, these performance-focused early evenings present exciting new and experimental works from both emerging, established, local and visiting artists engaged in the expanded domain of contemporary sound practice.

The Splinter Orchestra performing Dandry Flow

"Every Splinter Orchestra performance unfolds a unique improvisational sonic ecology combining highly developed music skills with thoroughly experimental sound-making and an intuitive compositional repertoire built from years of collective engagement. In October this year 21 of us travelled to the Pilliga in west NSW. Resources giant Santos plans to sink 850 gas wells in this area.

We camped, played and recorded in various Pilliga environments at different times of day during a period of intense drought. At the Dandry Gorge we employed our choreographed methods to play and make recordings on multiple machines over a large area. We’ll play these channels back in an 8 speaker configuration. 

Liam Bray & Ben Carey

Liam Bray is a creative technologist who works with algorithmic music composition and Artificial Intelligence, Ben Carey is a composer and improviser working with generative/interactive systems and modular synthesis. Performing for the first time as a duo, in this performance the pair will use modular synthesisers to build a collaborative improvisational and algorithmic performance.

Bray and Carey are interested in how technical systems, tools and code act as co-creators in the development of artistic works. Drawing on both musical human computer interfaces and traditional synthesis methods, the performance sees the two musicians exploring the space between human and machine agency in live performance. In this performance the duo use modular synthesisers to create a collaborative interactive system which acts as a co-creator throughout performance. This system is seeded with musical events and structures produced by machine-learning and algorithmic composition methods. 

Ailsa Liu

Ailsa works across mediums of experimental fiction and poetry, sound, sculpture. She is interested on topics of women, Western Sydney, Chinese Australians, writing for performance and public artworks. She is a member of Finishing School, a Western Sydney women Writers collective and All Girl Electronic, a Western Sydney electronic music collective. She is studying a Bachelor of Fine Arts/ Arts.

Ailsa's music experiments with void and space taking from themes of cinematic abstraction, urgency and sinister innocence. Influences on her soundscapes include texture and found sounds, field recordings of urban spaces and modular synths. She uses complex layering to explore dissonance and spatiality.
