Erkki Veltheim is a composer, improviser and performer with an interest in music as both a cultural construct and a sonic phenomenon. His work spans noise, improvisation, audiovisual installation, notated music, multidisciplinary performance and electroacoustic composition.
Erkki has had long-standing collaborations with Jon Rose, John Rodgers, Scott Tinkler, Anthony Pateras, and the late indigenous musician Gurrumul Yunupingu, and has performed with many other musicians from a wide range of styles and backgrounds, including William Barton, Mark Atkins, Marc Hannaford, Wadada Leo Smith, Simon Barker, Han Bennink, Shane Howard, Cat Power, Paul Grabowsky, Bae Il Dong, Brett Dean, Phil Slater, Robin Fox, Clocked Out (Vanessa Tomlinson and Erik Griswold), Anthony Burr, Andrea Keller, Ken Edie, Stephen Pigram, and Tony Buck.
Erkki has been commissioned by the Adelaide Festival, Australian Art Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra and Musica nova Helsinki, and his pieces have been performed by groups such as the London Sinfonietta, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Sydney Symphony Orchestra. He has also performed with the Australian Art Orchestra, Australian Chamber Orchestra, Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Elision, Ensemble musikFabrik and Ensemble Modern.
