STARTS @ 6PM SHARP // FREE ENTRY // REFRESHMENTS PROVIDED - Black Box/Block D/UNSW Paddington Campus (see directions in comments)
The seventh in a series of bi-monthly events organised by members of UNSW’s Sound, Energies and Environments research group. Showcasing a diverse range of artists, these performance-focused early evenings present exciting new and experimental works from both emerging, established, local and visiting artists engaged in the expanded domain of contemporary sound practice.

Club culture has, since its emergence in the mid 20th century, been seen as a low form of music practice. An always uncritical, heavily commercialised, functional form of popular entertainment. The club world and art world are divided along age-old boundaries that separate the high and low, the tasteful and the tasteless.
But what is more tasteless: playing a banging dubstep wobbler in the gallery, or a Schoenberg concerto in the club?
Featuring contemporary Sydney artists that ambiguously walk the line between club music and experimental sound, Out Of Phase explores a shared interest in the dysfunctional of the gallery and club settings. Investigating the polite, reverent intellectualism of the gallery and the messy, embodied pleasure of the club and drawing attention to how the two spaces are divided only along socially constructed norms of audience participation.
Is a club night just a really rowdy sound art installation? Is an art exhibition just a really tame club night?
Free entry, inner city Paddington location, one night only.

Jikuroux is producer, DJ and co-director of the Australian label ‘Decisions’. Jikuroux started out as a resident DJ for the short-lived Sydney based club night ‘Eve’ which she started in 2014 with a few friends. Since then she has gone on to produce two EPs on the emerging underground club music label Decisions and, last year, took part in the Decisions x Polymorphism showcase at Berghain. Jikuroux’s music is often very intricate and baroque but saturated with an uneasy tension and intensity. Her production combines heavy hydraulic bass wooshes and pneumatic percussion with an overall aesthetic that glistens, sparkles and fizzes. Jikuroux has recently also been expanding her practice to include live performances and compositions that go beyond the restrictions of a typical DJ booth. She continues to use the club as medium to create immersive musical worlds.

Chanel is currently a resident DJ for Sydney’s premier alternative queer night ‘House of Mince’. Chanel is a linchpin of Sydney’s underground dance music scene and has supported almost every important underground DJ that has passed through this city in the past few years. Chanel has a nuanced and well-researched relationship with club culture and champions artists and sounds that are drowned out by white/European/male voices and excluded by tech-bro gatekeepers.
