Chloe Kim (drums) and Jacques Emery (bass) are current jazz performance students from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. They discovered their common interest in drumming music as well as the jazz-influenced experimental improvisations and started playing together from 2016.
Specifically influenced by the Conservatorium lecturer Simon Barker’s Quintuplet and Septuplet studies, a drummer Greg Sheehan’s Number Diamond system and the traditional rhythms from various cultures (such as Korean traditional rhythms), their work focuses on developing knowledge in diverse rhythmic dialogues and using those shared language in any improvising/musical settings.

"Cellar Door" is a 10 piece-improvising ensemble that experiments with open-ended composition. With a focus on group collaboration, the band navigates through minimal, ethereal, as well as dense, chanting soundscapes.
Cellar Door recently recorded an album at Free Energy Device Studios, to be released later this year, which dwells in dark electro-acoustic depths with a sense of rustic group synchronicity. Tonight they are excited to present three new pieces.
