HONEY 1: ZÖJ, FOLK, Laura Altman

ZÖJ is whatever you think it is, but then also, it is not. Bringing together the virtuoso Kamancheh playing and Vocals of Gelareh Pour and the free-sound drumming of Brian O’Dwyer, ZÖJ create a nuanced experience unlike anything. Pour’s classical Persian pedigree shines through evocative Persian poetry sung in Farsi, as O’Dwyer’s experimental rumblings weave through-out. Two masters of improvisation, with completely diverse musical backgrounds, uniting to speak a common language and express incredible amounts of almost trance like emotion. Environment determines a ZÖJ performance, a rowdy pub may conjure a fierceness or rebellion, where a concert hall may entice a subtlety or peacefulness, yet the opposite of each could just as easily be true. In many ways, the audience is in control and through their energy will elicit the performance. ZÖJ is a uniquely powerful experience that typically leaves bystanders with but one utterance, ‘whoa’.

FOLK is an improvising trio inspired by the traditional folk songs of Ukraine, discovered through the Polyphony Project, an online archive of songs from Ukrainian villages. The trio, comprised of piano, double bass, drums as well as harmonica, music box, Peruvian whistle and found percussion weave through folk-like melodies, improvised dialogues and the harsh and the raw.
