Alexandra Spence & MP Hopkins - first time collaboration for these two. Exploring the five 't's' - tapes, text, tones, talking, and tiny sounds. MP Hopkins is an artist from Sydney that works across audio, performance, installation and texts. Working predominantly with voice, playback/recording devices, tape and feedback, Hopkins’ practice is an exploration of inner speech as a disjointed acoustic space; a blend of voices and disparate sounds that oscillate between interior and exterior, intelligibility and incomprehensibility. Alexandra Spence’s art and music explores the idea of listening as an active practice, examining the ways in which our individual notions of place and identity are shaped and mediated through sound. Through her practice she attempts to reimagine the intricate relationships between the listener, the object, and the surrounding environment as a kind of communion or conversation. With an interest in resonance, vibration and everyday sound, her aesthetic favours small sounds, object interventions, and unusual sound sources. (she holds the pseudo-scientific belief that electricity might actually be magic).
