GRAND RIVER (live)
(Spazio Disponible, One Instrument. Italy / Netherlands)
Hailing from Berlin; Dutch-Italian composer, poly-instrumentalist, and sound designer, Aimee Portioli aka Grand River brings her emotive, psychedelic and experimental live show to Sydney.
Having been brought to the world's attention via Donato Dozzy and Neel's Spazio Disponible imprint, her two releases; EP "Crescente", and album "Pineapple" shows an artist in full control of their power, able to create and conjure sonic vistas combining the voices of modern sound design, the complexity of the symphony and with nods to experimentation, minimalism and the transcendent dance experience.
Aimee’s own conceptual record label, One Instrument, invites artists to showcase sound studies using an instrument of their choice - expanding on her belief that “limitations foster creativity”.
Her music which places equal emphasis on using traditional instruments and machines as it does narrative structures and outlying experimentation, promises an all encompassing experience for Emu Cakes that promises to be parts intriguing, unsettling and totally ecstatic
COUCH - (live)
(Low Flung & Laura Altman)
A new project by Emu Cakes favourite and Sydney hero Danny Wild, aka Low Flung, and Laura Altman, a Sydney based clarinetist, improviser and composer.
Modular synthesisers meets wind instruments, wind instruments meets modular synthesisers.
Pastoral soundscapes, claustrophobic urban out takes, rainforest dub basslines and microsound explorations, wrapped up, processed, soaked in reverb pushed through the desk and out through the speakers.
A synthetic/organic story of sonic chapters.
AILSA LIU - (live)
Ailsa Liu is artist who creates work across experimental fiction and poetry, soundscapes and installation. Her music conveys a sense of voids or space, cinematic abstraction, urgency and sinister innocence.
Influences on her soundscapes include texture and layering of found sounds, field recordings of urban spaces and modular synths and spoken languages. She is a member of Curiousworks Makerspace, Finishing School writing collective and New Age Noise.
LUKE SNARL - (live)
Sydney stalwart puts down the DJ kit and brings his live modular show out in public.
Luke, half of legendary duo Sub Bass Snarl (with Seb Chan) has been a driving force in Sydney's electronic music scene for longer than most people can remember. A constant presence in Sydney's underground since 1991, he's s no stranger to the world of ambient and chill, having basically pioneered the category here with his Frigid and Cryogenesis events, huge inspirations to Strange Signals and many others.
Having supported Surgeon, Squarepusher, Luke Vibert, Surgeon, Jan Jelinek, Anticon, Sutekh, Cylob, Mike Dred, Neotropic, Manitoba/Caribou, dj/Rupture, Prefuse73, Clark, The Bug, Ikonika, Shackleton and many more over the years, we are privileged to hear this next evolution of Mr Snarl's sound.
MATT COSTAIN - (dj)
Strange Signals' Matt Costain has of late been constructing sets of lesser heard music that channels the experience of heightened, altered states. Polyrhythms overlaid with the sound of 70's synthesizers, modern arpeggios and forgotten recordings allow you to wade, fly or walk through the bardo.
