Baptism: Midsummer Ritual for the Birth of a new Decade

  • Milk Beach 52 Vaucluse Road Vaucluse, NSW, 2030 Australia (map)

Baptism laments the endless summer, its dry smokey tendrils consuming the land and sea, at the birth of this new decade that we never thought would arrive. We welcome two acts to perform alongside Baptism, Tina Stefanou and Jack Stoneham and Chloe Kim and tbc.

5:30pm for a 6:00pm start at Milk Beach near Nielssen Park

(Bus 325 from city if you are wondering how to get there)

TINA STEFANOU & JACK STONEHAM

Tina Stefanou is 33 yrs old, insecure about the future, confused about the purpose of art, is painfully de-conditioning her bourgeoisie learnings. She is grateful surprised and suspicious to be here. Jack Stoneham explores the natural flexibility of the saxophone as much as he explores its inherent weaknesses. The various sounds, textures and rhythms that may be heard in performance are a result of the duet between the demands of the player and the demands of the instrument. Their duo will warp the time space continuum and create immense gravitational waves that will shift the orbit of Neptune.

CHLOE KIM

Chloe’s interest in jazz and improvised music has been growing since she came to Australia in 2012. She developed her strength as a drummer whilst studying Jazz Performance at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and broadened her view and experience as a musician by actively getting involved in the current Australian music scene. Chloe values playing and knowledge-sharing opportunities with her family-like cohorts in Australia.

She co-leads several bands that are highly active in Sydney's jazz, improvising, experimental music scene, including minimalist/drone/jazz/rock group HOLOPEAK, a bass/drum duo JACHLO and percussion trio TA GO LAK which responds Korean folk and Shamanic drumming traditions. With these groups, Chloe developed her capacity in bringing individual tastes and influences that span various genres together.
Chloe will be playing with another mystery collaborator, soon to be announced.

BAPTISM

Baptism is Charlie Sundborn and Solly Frank who commune with the aquatic spirits and sing their drowned songs. Baptism facilitates musical rituals to mark the seasons.

This event is held on Gadigal land. We acknowledge the Gadigal people of the Eora nation as the traditional owners of this land and sovereignty was never ceded.
