Australia’s greatest trio return for a very special performance in the Playhouse

Few artists have made the Sydney Opera House their home quite like Australia’s acclaimed experimental trio The Necks. Since their debut a decade ago, and personal invitation from curator Brian Eno to perform at the Luminous festival, the band The New York Times called “the greatest trio on earth” have played the Joan Sutherland Theatre, the Studio, and the Drama Theatre, as part of Vivid LIVE in 2017. Now, following their stunning four-night residency in the Utzon Room earlier this year, The Necks return to complete the circle, with two very special performances in the Playhouse over one night this February.  

Hailed for their genre-bending mix of avant improvisation, post-rock rhythms and neo-classical melodies, Sydney’s own Chris Abrahams (piano), Tony Buck (drums) and Lloyd Swanton (double bass) have released 17 studio albums across their storied 30-year career, including the ARIA award-winning Drive By (2003) and Chemist (2006), and their most recent, Body, praised by Pitchfork as “one of the most powerful albums in the band’s catalogue.” The band also composed the ARIA-nominated soundtrack to the cult film The Boys.

The Necks’ Playhouse debut is a chance to experience this exceptional live band in all their unpredictable, virtuoso power and hypnotic musicianship.
