Roger Turner (drums) and Arthur Bull (guitar) have been playing as a duo since the early 2000s. In 2017, they invited Scott Thomson (trombone), a key member of a younger generation of Canadian improvising musicians, to form the trio called Monicker. Their freely improvised music moves rapidly by way of subtle responsiveness, the playful undermining of instrumental hierarchies, and an idiosyncratic internal propulsion. The trio has two records, both from their 2018 tour of Eastern Canada: Spine (Ambiances Magnétiques, studio recording) and Libr’aerie (Bug Incision, live recording). In his review, Stuart Broomer calls Spine “a high-water mark in Canadian free improvisation.”
Roger Turner has been working as an improvising percussionist
for nearly 50 years, collaborating in numerous established
and ad hoc configurations.
1970s: co-founded the label CAW records for improvised music with Anthony Wood (founder of the Wire Magazine), and John Russell, and became active in the establishment of platforms for improvised music in London. founded the workers’ music association series with concerts in West London involving Derek Bailey, Eugene Chadbourne, Paul Rutherford, Jon Rose, Lol Coxhill etc.
1980s: Began working with the vanguard of hi and low-fi electronic musicians developing a drum and percussion vocabulary for electro-acoustic music. this period saw the rise of the recedents with Lol Coxhill and Mike Cooper, a trio that moved ungraciously through the spheres of electronics, jazz, blues, noise, contemporary classical/new music without referencing any. this period also saw the start of work with Phil Minton and the development of percussion vocabularies for improvisation with voice.
With these foundations, over the last four decades Roger has played with Elton Dean, Lol Coxhill, Cecil Taylor, Henry Grimes, Keith Rowe, Yoshihide Otomo, Annette Peacock, Maggie Nichols, Ute Wassermann, Frederic Rzewski, Fred Frith, Axel Dorner, Joelle Leandre, Fred van Hove, Toshinori Kondo, Evan Parker, William Parker, Shelley Hirsch, Barry Guy, Barre Philips, Marilyn Crispell among many, many others
Arthur Bull is a guitarist who has been active
on the improvised music scene in Canada since the mid-1970s.He is currently a member of Les Surruralistes (with Éric Normand), The Spokes (with Bob Vespaziani) and Monicker. Arthur has released more than 20 CDs, including collaborations with Daniel Heïkalo, Bob Vespaziani, Hank Bull and John Heward. He has performed with notable Canadian and international improvisers, including Roscoe Mitchell, John Tchicai, Peter Kowald, John Russell, Joe McPhee, Derek Bailey, Paul Rutherford, Phil Minton, John Butcher, Michael Snow, Paul Dutton, John Oswald, Fabrizio Spera, Mike Cooper and many others.
Scott Thomson is a trombonist and composer based in Montreal.
His songs on others’ texts for singer and dance artist Susanna Hood have been played in many contexts, some involving her choreography. He co-founded and co-directed the Association of Improvising Musicians Toronto 2004-09, and co-directed the AIM Toronto Orchestra, formed for a project with Anthony Braxton in 2007. In 2016, he convened the Montreal-Toronto Art Orchestra to work with Roscoe Mitchell. Scott founded Somewhere There, a Toronto venue that hosted 850 concerts during his tenure, 2007-10. He has made site-specific works for mobile musicians and audiences in contexts including, notably, the National Gallery of Canada and the Art Gallery of Ontario. Scott programs the Guelph Jazz Festival with Karen Ng.
