We’ve teamed up again with Dual Plover to present the second round of Up close and personal, a series of physically distanced contemporary sound events like you’ve never seen before.

Each three hour program will feature two musical acts, each playing for one and a half hours with a collaborative segue at the midway point. Entry will be staggered with a rotating audience experiencing a unique 20-minute experience only 1.5 metres away from some of Australia’s most innovative musicians. Performers include Eric Avery, Graham King, Shoeb Ahmad, Nicola Morton, Matt Earle, Loose-y Crunché, Papaphilia, Jim Denley, Monica Brooks, Laura Altman, Garry Bradbury and Phantom Chips.

About the performers

Eric Avery & Graham King: 16 April, 5.30–7pm

Eric’s practice explores the deep relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous forms and narratives through the combination of dance and music. Eric is a violinist and contemporary dancer drawing inspiration from the relationship between different types of music, singing his ancestors’ songs with violin arranging, contemporary music and dance. More recently, Eric has performed with the Black Arm Band and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Byron Bay Bluesfest, and has opened for Grammy Award winner Rhiannon Giddens. For this performance, Eric will be accompanied on didgeridoo by his father, Graham King.

Shoeb Ahmad: 16 April, 6.45–8.30pm

Shoeb Ahmad offers a rich and extensive background in Australian music, creating idiosyncratic music over the last decade. Using guitar, keyboard, voice, and electronics, Shoeb works both as a singer/composer and improviser when performing solo and collaboration. Shoeb has released a diverse range of original music while also working on sound design for dance, theatre, installation pieces and contemporary chamber composition, inspired by 20th Century Avant-classical works, Indian ragas and minimalist electronic music.
