Newtown's regular new music hang returns 16th of May for the wonderful sounds of Paul Cutlan, Heather Prowse and Trevor Brown.
Artist Bios:
Paul Cutlan
Paul Cutlan’s uniquely expressive voice as a multi-instrumentalist and composer embraces jazz, classical and world music influences. His String Project has recently released its second album and remains an important vehicle for Cutlan’s synergy of composition and improvisation. He also features on recent releases by Chris Cody, Sam Gill and Steve Arié.
Cutlan was a member of the Australian Art Orchestra for 15 years and continues as a member of MARA! after 20 years. His career has taken him to major venues and festivals in around twenty countries.
His creative versatility has seen him in demand for theatrical productions by Belvoir, Sydney Theatre Company, as well as numerous stage musicals. Cutlan has performed with Tasmanian and Sydney Symphony Orchestras, the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra and the Australian Chamber Orchestra.
Heather Prowse
Heather Prowse is a Sydney-based session trumpeter, flugelhornist, vocalist, music educator, bandleader and composer. She graduated with a Bachelor of Music (Jazz Performance – Trumpet) from Sydney Conservatorium of Music in the class of 2017, where she was a member of the Improvising Ensemble led by Phil Slater and Simon Barker; and in 2018 was a participant in the Australian Art Orchestra's Creative Music Intensive in Tasmania.
Heather's highlights as an improviser include performances at Bohemian Grove, Johnston Street Jazz, MONA and Vivid Festival; workshops with Bennie Maupin, Ingrid Jensen, Sandy Evans, Dave Douglas, Peter Evans and Scott Tinkler; and being a featured solo artist at Sydney Fringe Festival's 'Creative Conversations' showcase in 2019.
Heather currently practices as an Artist in Residence at Annandale Creative Arts Centre; directs her own ensemble, 343 Brass Band; and has performed as an associate artist with Lime Cordiale, The Tipsy Scholars, Jackie Brown Jr. and On the Stoop. She has been a member and soloist of internationally acclaimed big bands Sydney Conservatorium Jazz Orchestra and Sirens Big Band.
Trevor Brown
Trevor Brown has performed and composed in a multitude of situations, from Symphony Orchestra to Outback Circus.
He has been featured artist at the Ars Electronica Festival in Linz, and performed with or conducted the London Improvisers Orchestra, The Vienna Improvisers Orchestra and collaborated extensively with Markus Stockhausen’s Intuitive Music Orchestra of Köln.
He has composed music for dance and theatre companies here and around the world, as well as award winning sound designs, installations and commissions for MONA, Australian Museum, AGNSW, winning the North Sydney Art Prize for site specific work in 2019.
He is the artistic director of the Sydney Improvisers Composers Kollektiv Orchestra and has curated and produced festivals and performances around the world.
