The hidden is part of a larger project exploring the hidden ripple effect of trauma and intergenerational trauma experienced in family life. It concerns the negotiation of annihilating forces in childhood and coming to terms with them as an adult.
It maps memories in images, sounds and words. Words which are the sonic and written scaffolding around which identity is formed. Words upon which a little self swings between the gaps separating identity, self and void, the internal and external. Words from early life which repetitively replay in the mind in the present, blurring any clear distinction between then and now, tinging every waking moments with the colours of the past, echos of the struggle of existential angst, threatening to obliterate every living moment with it's own potential for renewal. The struggle between the desired calm mindfulness of the present and deeper visceral impulses of flight and fight.
Images from fragmented memories are incorporated into a drawn memory map which also simultaneously behaves as a music/sound score. The body, with imprinted memories and responses, informs the voice which interfaces inner and outer worlds.
