‘The Greatest Trio on Earth’ return to the Utzon Room

The Sydney Opera House is excited to host the return of critically acclaimed improvisational trio The Necks. Beloved around the world, the avant-garde band have delivered a series of truly mesmerising performances at the Opera House that have gone on to become the stuff of legend.

Since their Opera House debut in 2008, and personal invitation from curator Brian Eno to perform at his curated Luminous event in 2009, the band The New York Times called “the greatest trio on earth” have played the Joan Sutherland Theatre, the Studio, the Utzon Room, Playhouse and the Drama Theatre. The trio have thrilled audiences with their immersive, mind-bending performances, and in 2022 will bring their virtuoso live act to the Utzon Room for four special nights.

Hailed for their genre-bending mix of avant jazz, post-rock and ambient music, Sydney’s own Chris Abrahams (piano), Tony Buck (drums) and Lloyd Swanton (double bass) have released 21 studio albums across their storied 30-year career, including the ARIA Award-winning Drive By (2003) and Chemist (2006), and their most recent, Three (2020), praised by Pitchfork as “perfecting a strange sense of locomotion”. The band also composed the ARIA-nominated soundtrack to the cult film The Boys and in 2019 received the Richard Gill Award for Distinguished Services to Australian Music.

The Neck’s summer residency is a chance to come together with this exceptional live band in the intimate setting of the Utzon Room.
