A Cementa institution, The Sound Night brings together the best artists working in this field for a night of experimentation, discovery, discomfort and joy. This time round we have invited artist Trevor Brown to both perform and curate the Cementa22 lineup.
Trevor is a freelance composer, sound designer, director, producer and radio presenter working across artistic and cultural categories for more than thirty years.
He works extensively across Australia, Europe and UK to Europe, is the Artistic Director of the Sydney Improvisers Composers Kollektiv Orchestra and is currently lecturing at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
This years lineup is:
Jonathan Wilson
a contemporary musician and composer from Western Sydney. He is an ARIA nominated musician, Screen Music Awards nominated composer and in 2018 co-composed the score to SBS TV series ‘Safe Harbour’ which won an international Emmy award.
His music aims to imbue a synesthetic memory laden sonic journey to his Western Sydney youth, a blurred space coexisting between the urban and rural. Working with smudged baroque forms and by warping traditional instrumentation (piano, guitar) through simple electro acoustic interventions (tape machines) and electronic processing (modular and effects), the sound takes on new meaning and aims to open joy, contemplation, and the slowing of time.
Sofie Loizou (Anomie)
Hailing from the nexus between dance floor and chill out, for decades now Sofie Loizou has set up working spaces on the outskirts & fringes, finding refuge in between the cracks and facades. Her tools are imagination, a willingness to experiment and a persistence of vision. Never one to be pigeonholed, she keeps her output diverse by producing under many aliases, and forges musical alliances with artists and makers from all over the planet including Germany, United States, South Africa, Poland, Russia, Indonesia and the UK.
Sofie’s new semi-improvised works for electronics range from the sublime and ethereal to the cathartic, taking the listener on a dramatic and sometimes emotional journey. To step into this aural world is to touch on a utopia so distant from our current world state it offers hope and fresh air, a glimpse of what could be.
Liberty
An accomplished electronic artist, guitarist and experimental cellist, Liberty's stylistically diverse music and soundscapes have provided the sonic environment for a variety of works across different art forms for more than two decades. Her compositions engage both the digital and the analogue/organic seeking to explore and exploit the tension between them. The work is particularly engaged with what happens to sound between performance and amplification and the way each live performance becomes part of the composition. Her commissions as composer/sound designer include numerous artists and production companies including Branch Nebula, Rakini Devi, DeQuincey Company, Liz Lea Dance, Urban Theatre Projects, Melbourne Workers Theatre, Film Australia, SBS, ABC, BBC, Belvoir St., Pact Youth Theatre, Akira Isogawa, and Performance Space. Recently she has performed with visual artist Nell at Mona Foma and Tina Havelock Stevens at Dark Mofo, Live Works and MCA.
