Nature on the Loose!

  • Wollongong Art Gallery 46 Burelli Street Wollongong, NSW, 2500 Australia (map)

A contemporary shadow theatre performance with live microtonal orchestra in a tale filled with comedy, myth, politics, and the supernormal.

Nature On The Loose is a shadow performance that follows the antics of animals, plants and even aliens in a world where humans have suddenly gone into hiding. The audience is immersed in a tale filled with comedy, myth, politics, and the supernormal.

The Shadow Theatre of Anaphoria Island prides itself in being a home where the marginalized, the obsolete, the exiled and the extinct find sanctuary. It is a meeting place for different symbolic and cultural elements dealing with contemporary spiritual and social concerns through lights, shadows and live music.

Original shadow puppets are supported by music performed by the custom-made instrumental orchestra tuned to a unique microtonal scale especially for the shadow theatre. After the show, audience members are invited backstage to see the puppets and musical instruments close up and to meet the cast.

Founded in Los Angeles in 1996, the Shadow Theatre of Anaphoria has performed at the Norton Simon Museum of Art (Los Angeles), Pacific Asia Museum (Los Angeles), New Langton Arts (San Francisco), Stella Adler Theater (Hollywood), and served as the resident company of the Folly Bowl, an outdoor amphitheatre constructed especially for our work. Following our previous participation in the Sydney Sacred Music Festival, this is the third shadow play production in Australia.

This project was funded by a Wollongong City Council Grant and the Wollongong Art Gallery.

"The music was amazing...Visuals were as impressive, transporting a listener beyond time and space to a region of beautiful clarity" (Los Angeles Times 2003).

Starring Hayley Carrick, Joshua Mills, Jariss Shead, Jess Boyle, Jiahong Zhao, Terumi Narushima, and Kraig Grady (Director).
