Chris Abrahams is best known for being a member of the group The Necks. However, he has also established himself as a solo performer, with many performances in Australia, Europe and the USA, and 12 solo albums to his name. His approach is informed by electronic techniques of sampling and synthesis. He thinks of the piano as an instrument with 88 ‘oscillators’ to which can be applied numerous forms of ‘modulation’ via string resonances and pedalling. His solo piano performances are: melodic and textural; mesmeric and emotive; delivered within a slowly evolving, meditative sound world. In December 2022 Chris released his new solo album Follower, his 6th for Room40.
Monica Brooks is an improviser/composer based in the Blue Mountains. Her current projects rely on interests relating to belonging/not belonging, conservation, escape, and resonant spaces. Using piano as a solo project, Brooks uses the resonant body of the instrument, in concert with the resonant body of a space. Brooks has been involved with projects such as Great Waitress (Magda Mayas/Laura Altman), West Head Project (Jim Denley/Dale Gorfinkel), Women's Auxiliary Choir (Sonia Zadro/Loni Cooper/ Annabel Howie/ Ces Hotbake), Electronic Resonance Korps, and Broads To Men Choir. Splinter Orchestra’s platform and community is a significant influence on her approach to music.
