Gary Daley is a Blue Mountains pianist, accordionist, composer, teacher and improviser, specialising in contemporary jazz, classical and world music. Best known as a musician playing in some of the elite bands of Australian jazz including The catholics and his quartet Bungarribee. Gary’s music has been presented at major venues and festivals throughout Australia and on many recordings featuring renowned contemporary Australian artists. Gary plays in the ARIA-nominated pre-school show Lah Lah’s Adventures and the Stripy Sock Club and is artistic director for the Blue Mountains concert series Live at the Village.
Fiona Hill is a Blue Mountains-based composer who has been recognised with multiple awards and nominations and has composed works for the Tasmanian Symphony orchestra (Śūnyatā), Sydney Dance Company (Habituate, Circumstance 2020, Springtime Again, Energetic Force), Ensemble Offspring (Pentography) as well as multiple electroacoustic and multi-channel works. Fiona’s “striking timbral exploration of abstract sonic properties” (Music Trust) and “seamless working in of live electronics” (Sydney Arts Guide) blends new technologies with corporeal evocations to generate detailed and immersive sound worlds.
In:flux is an extended electro-acoustic set with Fiona Hill on electronics with gestural controllers and Gary Daley on piano accordion. The concept is an immersive, semi-improvised, long-form ambient experience. This evolution allows time to discover the subtle nuances and timbres of the piano accordion through amplification combined with live processing and gestural manipulation of pre-recorded samples. The use of texture amidst breath and drone-like resonances creates a sonic palette which gives ample room for structural variations and subtle sonic details.
