JUDITH HAMANN
[cello and...]
SUNDAY July 2nd
at 7.30 p.m. [doors at 7]

Judith Hamann is a composer and performer from Narrm/Melbourne who lives and works in Berlin. An “extraordinary Australian cellist” (The Guardian) who “destroys the fiction of the musician who lives and works outside conventional parameters and puts in its place a series of compositions that are fundamentally humane” (Louise Grey, WIRE Magazine), her work encompasses performance, improvisation, electro-acoustic composition, field recording, electronics, site specific generative work, and micro-tonal systems in a deeply considered process based, or even ‘nomadic’ approach to creative practice. Currently her work is focused on expressions of immersion and saturation explored through durational, spatialised and electroacoustic approaches to sound, as well as an examination of psycho-physical materials and manifestations of shaking and humming.

Judith has studied contemporary repertoire with cellists including Charles Curtis and Séverine Ballon, as well as developing improvisational practice and sonic arts through collaborative projects in Australia and internationally.

She has worked with artists and ensembles including Oren Ambarchi, The Necks, La Monte Young, Michael Pisaro, Ilan Volkov, Éliane Radigue, Graham Lambkin, Alvin Lucier, Tashi Wada, ELISION ensemble, Marja Ahti, Joshua Bonnetta, Dennis Cooper, Sarah Hennies and Anike Joyce Sadiq. Judith is a member of Golden Fur, the Harmonic Space Orchestra, Yvette Janine Jackson’s Radio Opera Workshop, and has duo projects with Anthea Caddy, James Rushford, Sholto Dobie, and Lori Goldston.

Judith has performed widely at festivals including Tectonics (Glasgow, Athens etc.), UnSound (NYC), Sonic Acts (Amsterdam), Maerzmusik (Berlin), CTM (Berlin), The LA Philharmonic Fluxus Festival (LA), the Venice Biennale Musica (Venice), Tokyo Experimental Festival (Tokyo), and AURAL (Mexico City).

Her work has been released by labels including Blank Forms, Black Truffle, Another Timbre, and Longform Editions. Judith holds a Doctor of Musical Arts from UC San Diego.
