LAST EVER CAMPERDOWN WEEKEND!! The Extraordinary JAMES RUSHFORD

After 14 years and more than 140 remarkable performances, we will be closing the doors on the People’s Republic of Australasia in Camperdown with a wonderful final weekend.
One of our most internationally celebrated Australian experimental musicians will light up Saturday night and the following evening we welcome a brilliant trio of our most inspiring young musicians for our very last evening (see separate email).

Don’t miss these brilliant performers
and join us to celebrate 14 years
of extraordinary events…

We extend huge thanks to all the artists who have given us these great evenings, as well as all the friends and helpers who have worked, loaned and problem solved over the life of the Camperdown venue. And especially to the audiences, who are intrinsic to making the Republic a very special place.

JAMES RUSHFORD
SATURDAY January 13th
at 8 p.m.
[doors at 7.30...
NOTE slightly later time]

James Rushford is an Australian composer-performer whose work draws from a range of concrète, improvisatory, avant-garde and collagist musical languages and investigates the creases, cracks, and folds in traditions ranging from early music to New Age. In Rushford’s long-standing practices on piano, synthesizer,  electroacoustic devices, and portative organ, he brings to each instrument a delicate touch and a harmonic sensibility in which unorthodox tunings coexist with influences from fin-de-siècle Impressionism, the twentieth-century avant-garde, and the structures of popular music.

For this performance, Rushford will debut a pair of new works for portative organ, electronics, and voice: Quire (2022), a “kind of futuristic take on a medieval codex” for Pythagorean tuning, and Befall (2023), which will explore the principle of harmonic distance through layered tunings.

James has created original work for BBC Scottish Symphony, Melbourne Symphony, Ensemble Neon (Oslo), Présences Électroniques (Paris), Speak Percussion (Melbourne), Ensemble Vortex (Geneva), MONA FOMA, Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne International Arts Festival, Ultima Festival (Norway), Unsound Festival (New York), Tectonics Festival (Tel Aviv), Send and Receive Festival (Winnipeg), Biennale Son (Valais), Adelaide Festival and Liquid Architecture (Melbourne).

As well as previous projects with Klaus Lang, Annea Lockwood, David Behrman, Tashi Wada, Michael Pisaro, Eyvind King, Jon Rose, Haroon Mirza and Dennis Cooper, he works regularly with Golden Fur (his trio with Sam Dunscombe & Judith Hamann), Joe Talia, Ora Clementi (with crys cole), Oren Ambarchi, Kassel Jaeger, Anthony Pateras, Will Guthrie, Graham Lambkin and Francis Plagne.

His music has been published by a variety of international labels including Unseen Worlds, Another Timbre, Holidays, Erstwhile, Black Truffle, KYE and Shelter Press.

James holds a Doctorate from the California Institute of the Arts, and was a 2018 fellow at Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart.
