Farfinkel Pugowski formed around 2002 and began to explore creative approaches to jazz, improvised and experimental musics. These were formative years for the musicians and this band was a significant part of their journey. Their excellent recording Wollongong/Paddington 2006 is evidence of the strength of the ensemble. Hopefully it will be available for purchase on the night in the still popular CD format. (Otherwise go to: Farfinkel Pugowski Wollongong/Paddington 2006 | Farfinkel Pugowski | Out Hear)
Farfinkel continued when Peter and Dale became half of Museum of Fire, Sydney’s greatest free jazz repertory band, with Clayton Thomas and Darren Moore. Pugowski (James and Mike) formed two thirds of Roil, Chris Abrahams’ yang piano trio to the Necks yin. But Farfinkel Pugowski seemed to have little prospect of further convening when Mike decamped to Berlin and Dale to Melbourne (not to mention vibraphone deconstruction and instrument invention/construction).
But the planets have aligned and the band is back together for this special night at Monday Night Confessions:
Peter Farrar - alto saxophone + other instruments
Dale Gorfinkel - vibraphone + other instruments
James ‘Pug’ Waples - drums
Mike Majkowski - double bass
Monica Brooks will be coming down from the Mountains when she comes, to bring the thunder from one of the Church Street Studios Kawais.
