Grasps ‘when will you be here again?’ Album Launch

  • The Chippo Hotel 87-91 Abercrombie Street Chippendale, NSW, 2008 Australia (map)

'when will you be here again?' is the second album from Sydney/Eora-based artist Grasps.

Combining solo works with a carefully curated set of collaborations with Bayang tha Bushranger, Marcus Whale & Wa?ste (Felix Idle), Grasps pushes extremes of genre throwing all preconceived notions of their music away, and in replacement leaving raw emotional sonic outpouring.

The night will feature eclectic & variating performances from Grasps, Marcus Whale, Gift Exchange & 88Plaster*, all showcasing vastly different sounds but maintaining their raw emotionality.

Grasps is an electronic artist & producer based in Eora/Sydney, Australia. Their music attempts to show duality between emotional states. Spaces between melancholia/harshness through combinations of distortion ripped through gentle, soft melodies. Following the 2019 release of their metal/ambient/electronic enmeshment 'Awoken'; which saw collaborative works with 3D artist Nicholas Matthew Elstran (US) & noise-doom outfit Bract (AUS); ‘WWYBHA’ creates its own pathway, enmeshing atmospheric hazy pads, emotional vocal fragments and plucking melodies with the darkest formations of drum rhythm, ripped bassline distortion & twisted metal. Littering the album are field recordings of the Australian bushland where Grasps spent a significant period of time recording & reflecting. The album explores themes of facing the uncertainty of death, the afterlife, identity & self-worth, which can be heard throughout lyrically & sonically.

Grasps has released on LA-based label TAR (sub–Brainfeeder) & collaborated with local/international artists widely (Rico Nasty, Born In Flamez, Laces). While previously involved in Sydney-based label/club nights Sidechains & Eternal, Grasps has performed & presented work across Australia (in support of Yung Lean ‘Warlord’, Bladee, Thaiboy Digital, Fatima Al Qadiri, Cashmere Cat) as well as internationally having appeared at respected venues such as Forestlimit Grasps has released on LA-based label TAR (sub–Brainfeeder) & collaborated with local/international artists widely (Rico Nasty, Born In Flamez, Laces). They are a regular and long-standing host on Hong Kong Community Radio.

Marcus Whale is a Sydney composer, musician and artist. In addition to his musical output as Collarbones, Black Vanilla and Scissor Lock, his broader practice spans live performance, sound installation and recordings, scored musical works, video and composition for screen, theatre and dance. He has curated shows for Firstdraft and Serial Space, with sound and video works also exhibited by Underbelly Arts, Art Proper and Penguin Plays Rough. Frequent collaborators include Austin Buckett, Tom Smith, Michael Salerno, Ivan Cheng, Jess Olivieri, Pip Smith and Caterina Mocciola.

A twisted sense of magic seeps through the music of Sydney electronic trio Gift Exchange. It’s like a brooding storm cloud swirling with sounds ranging from punk to operatic. Comprised of vocalist Madison Scott, guitarist Jaime Krausmann and producer Eduardo Bianchino, the group is a self proclaimed ‘witch-house/drag/goth’ outfit (FBi Radio - Inderpendent Artist of the Week)

88Plaster* is the ambiguous and unknown project of extraordinary Sydney artist Luca Bianchino (AGONY, VISIONS). He’s a star, he’s made of plaster, he’s 88 years old
