Rare Faction
Rare Faction is the duo project of Phillippa Murphy-Haste (viola and bass clarinet) and Jacques Emery (double bass), two of Sydney’s art music mainstays.
Having played together within larger ensembles over the past few years, the duo bonded over their shared love of jazz, chamber music, and electronics. Drawing on these styles in a freely improvised context, the alternate pairings of double bass/viola and double bass/bass clarinet brought forth a wealth of fascinating timbres, textures and harmonies, which warranted further investigation in live performance.
Rare Faction are thrilled to present their debut performance at Jetsets.
Tony Buck & Alister Spence
Alister Spence - piano, prepared piano, percussion
Tony Buck - drums, percussion
Alister Spence and Tony Buck are two endlessly curious, deeply committed, distinctive improvisers. They share a fascination with submerged rhythm, oblique extended forms, entwined interplay, and sound for its own sake. As contemporaries their musical histories have run in parallel—and occasionally intersecting—for the last thirty years.
The duo’s debut release, Mythographer (ASM013) was listed in the ‘Best Albums of 2023’ by the New York City Jazz Record (January 2024 edition).

This is an intimate parlour gig so be prepared to get cozy. Unfortunately the only way in is up some stairs so please keep that in mind. We are so looking forward to listening all together.
