The Facts:
HUBBUB (France) A visionary group of improvisers from France, HUBBUB have made a reputation around the world for their discipline, sonic ingenuity and viscerally moving live concerts. This concert marks their Australian debut, providing Sydney audiences with a first-look at a legendary ensemble.
Zosha Warpeha (USA) / Freya Schack-Arnott (AUST)
Zosha Warpeha is a composer-performer working in a meditative space at the intersection of contemporary improvisation and folk traditions. Using bowed stringed instruments alongside her own voice, her long-form compositions explore transformations of time and tonality. She performs primarily on Hardanger d’amore, a sympathetic-stringed instrument closely related to the Norwegian Hardanger fiddle. In her Sydney debut, she will perform in duet with Freya Schack-Arnott on Nyckelharp

HUBBUB
Since 1999, Hubbub works on the sound matter to open up a moving space, inhabited by layers, distensions, entanglements, imbrications, pulsations, dots and lines. Between acoustic and electric, at the crossroads of several worlds, the group consists of five musicians whose activities trace multiple ramifications. The quintet's longevity has allowed them to create a universe that is more than the sum of its parts.
For more than twenty years, they have been creating orchestral, spectral music, whose extraordinary fluidity and constant intensity have earned the ensemble international renown. HUBBUB occupies a unique position at the intersection of various contemporary practices, and "each of its concerts is an event" .
The group has released three CDs on Matchless Recordings, Eddie Prévost's label, and one on For4Ears Records, Günter Müller's label, as well as a DVD on Œ dans l'O in collaboration with Clotilde Aksin and a digital album on Remote Resonator. A new album is in preparation.
«Imagine the opening fanfare of Strauss’s Thus Spoke Zarathustra slowed down so it takes a year to play.»
Daniel Spicer, The Wire
«Hubbub s’applique à se construire une identité propre où chacun doit, en privilégiant l’unité du groupe, trouver sa place dans un kaléidoscope bruissant et tendu de microsons et de micromouvements. Chacun de leurs concerts est un événement.»
Gérard Rouy, Jazz Magazine
«Experimental: minimal improvised ambient, noise, pseudo-industrial. Tweaks, squeaks and drones (few beeps and clicks), in two long tracks. I don’t know what in it appeals to me, but it did! Check it out. Extra-cool stuff. Weird shit these guys can do with guitar, saxes, piano and percussion.»
