"We come together to play the same instruments, but we are also bringing our own voices, so there is the encounter with the 'other'. We take each other out of ourselves and create a new understanding, collectively. The contrasts between our voices creates interest, and new meaning. The musical boundaries between ourselves become less well-defined. This is a nice way to think about our improvisation. We define ourselves in opposition to each other, but also learn from each other’s musical ideas."
