More than five years ago, we explored the sublime possibility of filling the house with acoustic basses and it was a wonderful thing. In 2019, we are going to take the experiment to another level...
THE BASS LIBERATION ORCHESTRA with THE LIVING ROOM THEATRE
SUNDAY 18th August Commencing at 7.30 p.m. [doors at 7]
Dave Ellis's Bass Liberation Orchestra
In a playing career that has spanned nearly 50 years, Dave has been a member of the Western Australian (WASO) and Sydney Symphony Orchestras (SSO), the Australian Elizabethan Theatre Trust (Sydney) Orchestra, the Australian Chamber Orchestra (ACO), the Australian Contemporary Music Ensemble (ACME) and the contemporary Flamenco group, Arrebato Ensemble.
He has performed with a huge range of artists including Peggy Lee, George Benson, Antony and the Johnsons, Eartha Kitt, Milt Jackson, Al Jarreau, Jon Rose, Louis Burdett, Rik Rue, Jeannie Lewis, SCRA (Southern Contemporary Rock Assembly), Keith Humble and Barre Phillips, with whom he played in a remarkable bass quintet at the People's Republic in 2011.
Dave writes... "a bunch of young guns and a couple of old codgers contributing to a concept of collective, collaborative, celebratory, contrabass(ic) creation. Exploration of any (all) area(s) of musical expression is encouraged, expected and, indeed, mandated! Our members share a love of our chosen instrument and its expressive qualities and possibilities.
Our charter is to explore the sonic possibilities of the Double Bass
We aim to find or create textures and lines, solo or in combination, using all manner of influences. Nothing is expected, anything can happen. The group can be anything from a solo double bass through its current number of 13 to... there is no limit to its membership."
The Living Room Theatre
The Living Room Theatre is the artistic voice of Michelle St Anne, finding its home in both traditional venues and in spaces hurt and abandoned.
For almost 20 years the company has delivered an extensive body of theatrical work with unique collaborations across genre, disciplines and industry. We draw upon beauty and suffering to give voice to those diminished in our society.
The Living Room Theatre is devoted to making poetic works that are beautiful to watch, to experience. Mixing theatre, movement, sound and film with text, the works collect the uneasiness of life and random acts of cruelty, with characters weaving between life and desire, dreams and blurred reality.
Overture – After The Fall
Provoked by of Charlotte Wood’s award-winning book ‘The Natural Way of Things’, Michelle St Anne from The Living Room Theatre has composed a theatrical soundscape featuring members of Dave Ellis’s double bass ensemble.
Embodying the sound of the Australian Gothic, the musicians will respond to the struggle of Wood’s female characters, and what it means to be hurt and hunted.
