Jetsets presents a night of improvised and experimental music curated for the Sydney International Women's Jazz Festival

Who needs a rhythm section anyway? After Ellen Kirkwood’s recent trip to Melbourne where she got together 3 of her favourite horn players from that city for a set of improvised, composed and in-between music, she thought she’d keep the idea going with a Sydney group. Phillippa, Paul and Matt, all innovative, unique and imaginative musicians with their own cool stuff going on, join Ellen for this brand new project. Alloy will present a set that blurs the lines between composed and improvised music, embracing the weird and showing off the sonic possibilities of their instruments.

REBEL SCUM

Rebel Scum bring you intergalactic tone poems reflecting on their journeys through the galaxy.
Rebel Scum is Bonnie Stewart (drums/electronics) and Rhys Mottley (guitar); two experimental/improvising artists from Sydney, Australia.
Rebel Scum combines the influences of both Bonnie and Rhys' punk backgrounds, love of science fiction and improvised music. Using this amalgamation of interests, they create long form improvisations shaped by conceptual storylines.

MONICA BROOKS

Monica Brooks is a Blue Mountains-based pianist and composer. Brooks’ sound is poetically and sonically influenced by the landscape and notions of love and loss. As a performer Brooks has collaborated with many musicians including Magda Mayas and Laura Altman for Great Waitress, Jim Denley and Dale Gorfinkel for West Head Project to name a few. Brooks has composed for various choirs and scored for film projects. Her current projects rely on solo piano form for compositions at home, or in churches as a reverberant community space.

An initiative by musicians with a desire to rejuvenate Sydney’s creative music scene, Jetsets is a brand-new series that provides a space for boundary-pushing contemporary musicians in Sydney.

The artist-run series presents a broad range of exciting musicians who make creative, explorative jazz and improvised music. Jetsets is presented at the rustic Tempe Jets BrandX creative space.

Suggested donation for entry: $10-$20. Cash preferred.
