Anthony Pateras (b.1979) is a composer, pianist and electronic musician, active since since the late 90s. Alongside writing concert works, he performs in improvised, electronic & experimental rock contexts.
He has been commissioned by INA-GRM, Radio France, Südwestrundfunk, ensemble]h[iatus, Muzzix and Kitchen Orchestra Stavanger. His music has been performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, BBC, Toronto & Melbourne Symphony Orchestras, Australian Chamber Orchestra, Golden Fur & ICE.
In 2021, his work was extensively featured at Festival Archipel (Geneva) & Klangspruen Festival (Schwaz).
Recent commissions include A Dread Of Voids (Festival Archipel, Geneva, 2021), Syncopes (Centro di Musica, Modena, 2020), Mécanique Céleste (A&F Architectes, Yverdons-Les-Bains, 2020) & Pseudacusis (Musica Sanae Festival: Naples, Sokolowsko, Berlin, 2019).
Since 2012, Anthony has worked on a cycle of solo/tape works that blur recorded and performed sonic realities. Most of these are documented on his 5CD Collected Works Vol. 2, featured in Bandcamp’s Best Contemporary Classical Albums of 2019.
He has performed and recorded in the bands Pateras/Baxter/Brown, PIVIXKI, Thymolphthalein, North Of North & Beta Erko. In 2022, his latest is trio Sulla Lingua with Italian musicians Stefano Pilia (baritone guitar) and Riccardo La Foresta (drums). His tētēma project with vocalist Mike Patton headlined the 2017 Mona Foma Festival, and he contributed pipe organ to SunnO)))’s acclaimed 2019 release Life Metal.
Long-term collaborations are with violinist Erkki Veltheim, electronic musician Jérôme Noetinger, guitarist Stephen O’Malley and the composers Anthony Burr & Rohan Drape. He has also made work with Chris Abrahams, eRikm, Robin Fox, Maja Osojnik & Valerio Tricoli, and had improvised meetings with Han Bennink, Paul Lovens and The Necks.
Anthony has published over 40 albums on Tzadik, Editions Mego, Ipecac, Cave12, Bocian & Penultimate Press, and from 2012-19 produced the 15 volume Immediata text/music project.
