One of Australia's finest young musicians is joining us at the People's Republic for the first time with two brilliant improvising ensembles on the one night...
ELSEN PRICE [Bass]
with the
INLAY ENSEMBLE
and
VERMILLION TRIO
SUNDAY May 8th
at 7.30 p.m. [doors at 7]
The Inlay Ensemble is a Sydney-based modern string ensemble led by double bassist Elsen Price. The group has featured distinguished musicians such as Adrian Keating, John Napier, Susie Bishop, Romano Crivici and Connor Malanos, bringing together forward-thinking and improvising string players. Their 2021 album 'Songs for Habitual People' was released through Portuguese experimental label Creative Sources Recording, and features compositions by Elsen incorporating social commentary, profound emotion and wry humour.
Vermillion Trio are an improvisation group traversing the boundaries of classical art music and gritty underground electronica, finding structure in chaos. Playing across Sydney venues including Venue 505 and the Factory Theatre, the trio have built a cult following for their progressive experimentation and have worked with many acclaimed Australian artists.
The trio consists of Alia Josephine on tenor saxophone, Julia Magri on double bass and Lehra Karmazina on synthesiser, and their unique instrumentation creates textures and structures that break the typical boundaries of the free jazz form.
Elsen Price is an Australian double bassist from Sydney. Elsen began his musical journey as a self-taught double bassist from Bithramere in North West NSW. After finishing school, Elsen worked as an apprentice mechanic for 3 months before quitting/being fired. On a small whim and a bit of a joke, Elsen found a job vacancy on the internet going for a full time double bass position with the NSW Police Band. With nothing to lose, Elsen auditioned and won the job at 18 years old (2008) and started his professional career as a musician. In 2010, Elsen won a scholarship to study with Alex Henery (Principal SSO) at Sydney Conservatorium, and started his first formal education on double bass. Elsen's career highlights include performances with Josh Groban, Mike Patton, Lee Ranaldo and the SSO, and solo performances throughout Australia, NZ, Japan, Czech Republic, Taiwan and the UK. He won 'Best Soundtrack' at the International Independent Film Awards for 'Dead Sunrise' in 2016, and has a number of critically acclaimed and award nominated albums including solo works 'Descent of the Free' (ABC/Universal) and 'The Life Long Day Dreamer' (Rippa). Elsen has also taught workshops throughout Australia, at the University of Auckland (NZ), Wells Cathedral (England), The Scottish Bass Society (Scotland) and at HAMU (Czech Republic).
