HINTERLANDT is a Sydney-based quartet playing original music written by Australian-German composer, Jochen Gutsch. With its combination of contemporary chamber music, indie songwriting and jazz harmonies, the band’s music is as progressive as it is emotional. Embedded in intricate string arrangements, mezzo-soprano Nicole Smede carries the narrative forward as the ensemble moves through emotive sound worlds.
Hinterlandt have released five albums on independent label Art as Catharsis, with the latest album ‘Seven Tales’ receiving 4/5 Stars in the Sydney Morning Herald. But their focused and exhilarating music is best enjoyed in an intimate live context. In Sydney, the ensemble has performed everywhere from City Recital Hall and Glebe Town Hall via Venue 505, Foundry 616, 107 Projects, Lazybones and Django Bar to the Goethe-Institut and Campbelltown Arts Centre. Elsewhere, they have played at Mona Foma Festival and Mona Museum in Hobart, Heide Museum of Modern Art in Melbourne, Ballarat Art Gallery, Wagga Wagga Art Gallery, and many other places.
