Trio Now // Michael Avgenicos: Eudaemons

  • Church St Studios 62-68 Church Street Camperdown, NSW, 2050 Australia (map)

For the penultimate Confession of 2024: the debut project of saxophonist Michael Avgenicos @5vgenicos

Sydney based tenor saxophonist Michael Avgenicos brings together a new quartet, featuring long standing friends and collaborators Wilbur Whitta, Max Alduca and Tim Geldens to perform his new set of original compositions, "Eudaemons."

Eudaemons roughly translates to "good demons" or "good spirits."

This concert will feature material loosely inspired by Greek myths and philosophies, dealing with themes of heroism, tragedy, and paradox. Some pieces are composed as a palette for textural, meditative improvisation, whilst others are melodic, structured and energetic. Expect to hear a thrilling expression of spirit, driven by Michael's deep, emotive and fluid style.

Michael's current projects include Hamed Sadeghi's ARIA nominated groups Eishan Ensemble and Empty Voices, Matt Thomson/Alex Hirlian's Tourismo, Paul Derricott's COAST, Max Alduca's Second Sight, Avgenicos Brothers' Reduction, and his new jazz quartet, Eudaemons.

Michael was recently featured as one of 6 finalists at the National Jazz Awards Saxophone competition, and has performed with many notable names in Australia including Barney McAll, Sandy Evans, Mike Nock, Lloyd Swanton, Jeremy Rose, Peter Koopman, Aaron Blakey, and more.

Opening this coming Monday 9 Dec: we are very excited to present TRIO NOW ft. legendary Oz jazz pianist Paul McNamara. This is a rare opportunity to see a key musical force in the Australian jazz landscape so 'caaarn down!

Piano: Paul McNamara

Bass: Dave Pudney

Drums: Greg Johns

“the piano will keep you honest, because no matter what you tell yourself, how far out or good you think you are, just go over there and give the piano a chance to speak back to you. If there is anything there funny, it’ll sure tell you, but if there’s something in there beautiful it’ll let you know, too.” Hampton Hawes.

Add two other voices to this piano, and the honesty, the humour and the beauty endlessly expand.

Trio Now is a device. We play with the hearing/listening world of musical sound.

“I believe that all people are in possession of what might be called a universal musical mind. Any true music speaks with this universal mind to the universal mind in all people.” Bill Evans
