All my desires and ruminations are no more and no less than eddy currents generated by the gradual exhalation of our universe.” - Ted Chiang in ‘Exhalation’
Words, breath and all the eddy currents between. Exhalations of a Mechanical Mind, co-created by Naomi Johnson and Elizabethi Jigalin, proposes a vast canvas where the augmented flute creates a whole universe of sound. Drawing on fiction and verse, journey through a beguiling sonic playground where flute and electronics combine in musical whimsy.
Naomi and Elizabeth met in 2015 as part of a performance of Salvatore Sciarrino’s Il cerchio tagliatto dei suoni at the High Court in Canberra, and since then their musical collaborations have explored play, poetry, non-traditional performance spaces and plenty of laughter. The pair are core members of Sydney-based new music collective The Music Box Project, which has seen them perform at BIFEM (2019), for a live streamed audience on Cockatoo Island (2020) and in their inaugural festival Cut Paste Pay (2024). Bubbling with energy, Exhalations of a Mechanical Mind is their first foray into co-creating as a duo on stage.
